Pasco sophomore spends week in Olympia as Senate page
Sonora Garcia, a sophomore at Pasco High School, spent a week working as a page for the state Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. She was sponsored by 16th Legislative District Sen. Mike Hewitt, R-Walla Walla.
“I appreciate the work Sonora did for us here with the Senate Page Program. I’m glad she got to experience what a day in the life here at the Capitol is all about,” Hewitt said.
The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. They spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.
“You get to meet other pages from different areas across the state and learn about how you can get involved in the legislative process near you,” Garcia said.
Garcia plans to major in linguistics at University of Washington or Central Washington University. She is the daughter of Irene Garcia of Pasco.
