Richland, Prosser students recognized for artistic talents

A first-grader from Richland’s Jason Lee Elementary School has a poem moving on to a national art competition after it took top honors at a state contest sponsored by the Washington State PTA.

Liahna Rogers’ poem, Imagination Fly, was awarded Outstanding Interpretation, or first place, in the state organization’s annual Reflections art contest. The poem played on this year’s contest theme of “Let Your Imagination Fly.”

Three other Richland students received awards in the contest—Arjun Sahai of Enterprise Middle School and Isabel Lin of Hanford High School earned Awards of Excellence, or second place, in literature and visual arts, respectively. Nikihita Bontha of Enterprise Middle School received an Award of Merit, or third place, in photography.

Sofia Martinez, a special needs student in the Prosser School District, also earned an Award of Merit in literature.

Another Enterprise student, Kjerstyn Jordheim, was also recently honored in a national arts contest focused on stopping violence against children. Her poem, Afraid of the Dark, appeared in the online magazine Safe.
