Attorney general to spread wireless security message Oct. 7 in Tri-Cities

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson is scheduled to be in the Tri-Cities on Oct. 7 to spread information about being safe when surfing online, particularly when using wireless mobile devices.

The Cyber Safety campaign aims to teach people about the latest ways scammers and hackers seek to get personal and other information, a news release said. Microsoft, the Federal Trade Commission and AARP also are sponsoring the event.

A survey conducted by AARP shows many people don’t know basic safety and security protocols when surfing online, particularly when using Wi-Fi networks. Con artists are known to set up dummy wireless signals so they can gain access to an unsuspecting user’s smartphone or tablet computer.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Three Rivers Convention Center, 7016 W. Grandridge Blvd., Kennewick. It is free to attend, but registration is required by going to www.aarp.org/wa or calling 877-926-8300.
