Tri-Cities RN named School Nurse of the Year. It’s big praise as districts face cuts

A Pasco High School nurse has earned the accolade of 2025 School Nurse of the Year by a state organization.

Melissa Abel, a registered nurse, will be recognized this fall by the School Nurse Organization of Washington and be awarded a $500 scholarship to attend the National Association of School Nurses.

There are 1,000 full-time nurses serving more than 2,100 schools.

“Melissa consistently demonstrates the highest standards of care and advocacy for students and families — this recognition is incredibly well-deserved,” said Billie Jo Wensveen, Health Services coordinator for the school district, in an announcement.

“This is not only a personal achievement for Melissa but a proud moment for our entire district. It reflects the strength and impact of our school nursing team,” she continued.

The recognition of Abel’s hard work comes as Tri-City school nurses are reeling from job cuts in neighboring Richland School District. Five full-time nursing positions there are being eliminated this summer in a move fellow nurses have called “downright dangerous.”

Abel spends the majority of her time working directly with students on their care, said the release.

“Pasco School District’s health services team plays an integral role in supporting the academic and emotional success of our students, especially as schools serve more students with complex health needs. This recognition underscores the critical importance of their work,” said the announcement.

Abel’s work is made possible through local levy funding, the district noted.
