Here’s how Tri-City high schoolers can take college classes for free this summer
Eligible high school juniors and seniors can take college-level classes at Columbia Basin College this summer for free thanks to new state and federal funding.
The Running Start program already allows eligible high schoolers in the Tri-Cities the ability to take tuition-free courses during fall, winter and spring quarters. This has allowed some students to even graduate high school with two years of a four-year college degree completed.
Now, CBC’s program is now expanding to the summer quarter in order to increase access.
“Students can attend summer quarter tuition free, and students will not need to pay for books. This will no doubt be beneficial to students who take advantage of this great opportunity,” said Elizabeth Hernandez-Osorio, director of Running Start at CBC.
College registration begins May 24 for returning students and May 26 for prospective students. The nine-week quarter start Monday, June 27.
Students who enroll in Running Start must take an online self-placement test, apply through the college’s free admission application, attend orientation and then register for classes.
Students must also obtain an enrollment verification slip from their high school counselor in order to waive tuition.
About 1,149 high school students were enrolled in Running Start last fall quarter.
