With about an hour on the clock, eight Kennewick School District students sauteed, skewered and served creative and healthy dishes at the 2022 Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge — all inspired by their favorite book or movie.

Some of the dishes from the event include ratatouille, inspired by the Walt Disney animated movie of the same name; a shepherd’s pie inspired by the Harry Potter movies and books; and “Rapunzel” cookies.

In the end, judges selected Fuerza Elementary fourth-grader Liam Ross’s Beyond the Galaxy Burgers, with blue cheese crumbles, as the winning dish.

He took home a basket full of cooking utensils and will be considered for a regional finalist award. A regional finalist may also be considered for one of five national finalist spots.

“The national Future Chefs initiative, now in its 12th year, was created to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to be active and creative in the kitchen,” said a district news release.

The Kennewick students joining over 2,600 others in more than 1,300 Sodexo-served school sites in 30 states, including Washington.

The district has been hosting the challenge, which pairs high school-age students and elementary school students, for about a decade.

Ross’ supervisor was Maysi Marvin, and his dish was inspired by Star Wars, he told the Herald.

Liam Lilyblade, a fourth-grader at Sunset View Elementary, placed second with creamy grits and curried poached eggs, inspired by the Disney movie “Mulan.”

Keegan Glass, a fourth-grader at Eastgate Elementary, took third with his “Big Hero 6” buffalo wings and rice.

From ratatouille and fruit skewers, to soup and baked hot wings, Kennewick elementary students at last week’s Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge got creative with their dishes and prepared them for judging in less than an hour.
