Tri-City schools cancel recess, considering what to do about practices, sports events
No recess or outdoor physical education classes will be allowed for kids at several Mid-Columbia schools on Tuesday.
The air quality deteriorated from a level considered unhealthy to a level considered very unhealthy by midmorning.
▪ Richland School District students were being kept indoors during recess and P.E. classes.
Principals also were told not to have students wait in any lines outside of building.
Students and staff were being reminded to drink fluids to keep lungs hydrated.
▪ In the Kennewick School District, all students were being kept indoors for recess, physical education and lunch.
Officials planned to make a decision in the afternoon about whether or not to cancel middle and high school athletic events and practice.
“The safety of students and staff is a priority and we will continue to monitor the air quality advisories regularly and make any adjustment,” the district said in an announcement.
▪ The Pasco School District was keeping students and staff inside for recess, lunch and P.E. and principals had been advised to make sure students not stand in lines outside buildings.
All outdoor after-school activities and athletic practices have been postponed or moved indoors.
The junior varsity football game has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. Girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games have been moved to Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon.
▪ The Prosser School District was restricting all outdoor school activities, including recess, until air quality improves.
Housel Middle School Tuesday practices have been canceled.
Prosser High School practices will be held indoors. Prosser High School games scheduled Tuesday have been canceled and rescheduled.
