A man who initially fled Thursday morning after crashing his car into a fire hydrant in Kennewick was arrested after he returned to the scene, allegedly to retrieve a large bag of methamphetamine.

Police were called to Hood Avenue and Neel Street after witnesses saw Alan Ridgway run from the crashed vehicle only to return shortly after and be seen retrieving something from it, a release said.

However, an officer saw him running in the 3000 block of west Canal Drive as he ran from the vehicle the second time. Ridgway three something across the street into the bushes and ran but the officer caught him as he fell down an embankment next to the street.

A police dog later found the bag of methamphetamine that police say Ridgway threw. He was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and driving offenses.
