5 injured in crash near Paterson

Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash seven miles west of Paterson early Tuesday morning.

Luis M. Rodriguez-Lopez, 19, of Stockton, Calif., was driving a silver 1999 Honda Accord east on Highway 14 about 5:15 a.m. when he crossed the centerline and struck a red 2000 Chevrolet Express van, the Washington State Patrol said.

Juan M. Acosta-Andrade, 41, of Pasco, the driver of the van, was heading west on the highway with three passengers, Jose Garcizazo-Mendoza, 71, of Hermiston, Maria Heraldez, 38, of Hermiston, and Saturnina Medina, 65, of Hermiston.

The three passengers were taken to Trios Hospital in Kennewick with unknown injuries, the state patrol said. Everyone in the van was wearing seat belts.

The Accord’s driver and Juan M. Rodriguez-Araza, 22, of Stockton, a passenger in the sedan, also were taken to Trios with unknown injuries.

The state patrol said inattention was the cause of the crash and Rodriguez-Lopez was cited for second-degree negligent driving.
