Authorities have halted the search for a Lake Stevens, Wash., man who likely drowned while swimming at Palouse Falls on Sunday.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as James A. Hopkins, 22, in a release.

“Due to the dangerous water below the falls, efforts to recover the body have been suspended,” the release said.

The sheriff’s office, Columbia Basin Dive Rescue and Medstar were called to Palouse Falls at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on a report that three people swimming at the base of the falls appeared to be struggling.

Witnesses were able to help two of the swimmers but not Hopkins.
