Kennewick woman nearly scammed out of $10,000

Police and bank employees helped keep a Kennewick woman from getting scammed out of $10,000.

Luana Lewis recently received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson, police said. The caller told Lewis he was in an accident and needed money.

The caller asked for $10,000 and Lewis deposited the money into a Wells Fargo account, police said. Lewis, fearing she had been scammed, contacted police and the bank the next morning.

Bank officials checked and the money had not been transferred from the account. Police were able to get a warrant and get the $10,000 returned to Lewis.

Police want to warn citizens that scams are common during the holiday season. People should not give out personal information or send money to callers.
