A Hermiston man was arrested Monday after officers discovered 14 neglected cats at his home.
Three cats were dead and two required immediate medical care.
Hermiston police responded to 141 NE Seventh St. about a report of possible animal neglect about 1 p.m. Monday. Officers found 14 cats “with varying conditions.”
David Zehner, 57, was arrested and booked into the Umatilla County jail on suspicion of first-degree animal neglect.
Pet Rescue of Hermiston responded and assisted police with the removal of all the animals from the small home.
“Though minimum care as defined by statute can be very subjective and is often the cause of varying opinions, it was clear based on the conditions our officers found the animals to be living in; minimum care was not being met for these animals. We absolutely appreciate the support of Pet Rescue and the difficult job they do for the city of Hermiston,” said Chief Jason Edmiston in a press release.
