Woman injured in crash at Gage and Steptoe in Kennewick

A man was arrested late Saturday in Kennewick for vehicular assault after the car he was driving struck another, pinning the other driver in her vehicle.

Kennewick police were called to the intersection of Gage Boulevard and Steptoe Street just before 9 p.m. Betsy Gonzalez was traveling east on Gage Boulevard and was going through the intersection with Steptoe Street when James Santo drove into her car as he attempted a left turn from the westbound lanes of Gage onto Steptoe.

The force of the crash trapped Gonzalez’s legs under her car’s dashboard, requiring firefighters from the Kennewick Fire Department to extricate her. She was taken to Trios Health in Kennewick for nonlifethreatening injuries.

Santo was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of vehicular assault. Alcohol is considered a contributing factor in the crash, police said.
