Police took a 14-year-old boy into custody Friday morning after he made a threat against Highlands Middle School in a text message, putting the school on lockdown for more than an hour.

Kennewick police officers were called to Highlands just after 8 a.m. for a reported weapons complaint, a Kennewick police release said. A student provided administrators and investigators with a tip about the threat from another student who wasn’t at the school at the time.

Police learned the boy who reportedly made the threat was in Richland and police there took him into custody and transferred him to Kennewick, where was interviewed.

District officials said sent messages to parents through its email and text alert system about the lockdown but noted that there was no immediate danger to students. Police also talked with parents who visited the school after hearing about the lockdown.
