Update: Semi trucks collide in fog north of Paterson

Two semi trucks collided just before 9 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 221 about eight miles north of Paterson.

Gary Register, 45, of Pasco, was driving north on the highway in heavy fog when he swerved to miss another semi that was turning west onto Gwinn Road, said the Washington State Patrol.

Register overcorrected and the truck and one trailer flipped and then was struck by a southbound truck with two trailers driven by Michael D. Stump, 68, of Clackamas. Register was not hurt. Stump was taken to Prosser Memorial Hospital.

John Herman, 56, of Allyn, Wash., was cited for failing to yield the right of way to Register, said the WSP.

The highway was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared, said the state Department of Transportation.
