Speeding car crashes into Kennewick light pole

Driver Christopher Cervantes, 19, answers questions Thursday from Kennewick police officer Scott Peterson after losing control of the Honda sedan he was driving and slamming sideways into a street light on West Fourth Avenue near South McKinley Place. Witnesses reported the Kennewick teen was speeding and swerved out of control when attempting to pass a vehicle in front of him in the eastbound lane of Fourth Avenue. He apparently overcorrected, slid over the curb and hit the light pole causing the support arm and light to fall to the ground. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible concussion and other minor injuries. Police officials say he will be cited for reckless driving. A Kennewick man was cited for reckless driving after crashing into a light pole just before 11 a.m. Thursday at West Fourth Avenue and South McKinley Place in Kennewick.

Christopher Cervantes, 19, of Kennewick, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of a possible concussion and other minor injuries.

Cervantes’ eastbound Honda lost control after swerving to avoid slower-moving cars while passing, according to Megan Openshaw, 41, of Kennewick, who witnessed the wreck.

Openshaw was driving west on Fourth Avenue. She said if she would have been 10 seconds sooner into her day, she would have been in the path of the car.

The Honda and light pole were heavily damaged.
