Abducted Kennewick woman, 86, escapes from trunk in Oregon
An 86-year-old Kennewick woman managed to escape unharmed from the trunk of her car after being abducted by three teens and driven to Oregon.
A 14-year-old girl, 15-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy were arrested early Tuesday in Wood Village, Ore., on suspicion of kidnapping.
The Oregonian newspaper reported that the girl is apparently related to the elderly victim, Hazel Abel.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said Abel was taken from her house on the 5300 block of West Skagit Avenue sometime on Monday.
She was forced into the trunk of her car and driven to Multnomah County, the sheriff’s office said.
The car stopped at a Walmart in Wood Village, Ore., and Abel was able to pop open the trunk and get to safety, Lt. Steve Alexander with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office told the Oregonian.
It’s unclear if Abel escaped while the teens were inside the store or if she was left in the parking lot.
A Walmart employee called Multnomah sheriff’s deputies about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday after Abel came into the store, the newspaper reported.
A detective spotted the teens hours later near a gas station across the street from the Walmart, the newspaper reported.
The teens were being held Tuesday at an Oregon juvenile detention facility.
Abel was checked out by doctors in Oregon before being cleared to return to Kennewick.
Prosecutors in Benton County were contacted by Multnomah County officials, said Terry Bloor, Benton County’s chief deputy prosecutor.
If the teens are criminally charged in Benton County, they will have the option to voluntarily return to Washington or fight extradition, he said.
