Oregon State Police say a Pasco man was the driver of a Ford Explorer that crashed Thursday afternoon near Pendleton, ejecting at least two of his six passengers.
One of the thrown passengers died Sunday at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, the state police said.
Margarito Martinez-Sauceda, 58, was driving east on Interstate 84 when a tire blew out, causing him to drive into the median and roll several times, said OSP investigators.
He was later transferred to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.
Gary Elkins, 42, of Stayton, and Clifford Steeley, 43, of Adams, were thrown from the SUV and taken to area hospitals. Elkins died while being treated for his injuries in Portland.
Elkins was transferred to Portland’s OHSU. Steeley ended up in St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla.
Passenger Patsy Elkins, 40, of Echo, was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital.
Vanessa Medelez, 32, of Hermiston, left the crash but later showed up at St. Anthony’s. After she was treated, she was arrested on an outstanding warrant for a probation violation and taken to the Umatilla County jail.
Witnesses said two other adult men were in the SUV but ran off. OSP investigators are working to identify them. One is believed to have an outstanding arrest warrant, said a news release on Tuesday.
