Fire contained on Yakima Training Center after burning more than 3,000 acres

A brush fire sparked by weapons training on the Army’s Yakima Training Center on Thursday evening was contained Friday morning and evacuation notices for residents south of Vantage were lifted.

The fire burned between 3,000 to 4,000 acres near the center of the military installation before firefighters from the training center and Kittitas County were able to contain it, said Steve Kruger, deputy to the training center commander.

Firefighters stayed on the scene overnight, and all the flames were out by late morning, Kruger said.

“We’re happy to say the danger is over and we’re just doing some mop-up work,” Kruger said. “We want to thank the response from our Kittitas County partners, too.”
