Update: 1 dead in gas station confrontation. 2nd killing in Pasco in a week

A 38-year-old man was shot and killed near the gas pumps at a Pasco convenience store Sunday night.

Several people reported hearing gunshots outside the Pik-A-Pop store on Fourth Avenue at Jan Street at 10:30 p.m., according to dispatch reports.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to his head at the gas pumps and three men near him.

Pasco police, who were in the area on a separate investigation, reported hearing three gunshots, Pasco police Lt. Tom Groom told the Tri-City Herald.

The men claimed the victim pulled a gun on the group, and they fired in self-defense, according to dispatch reports. No arrests have been made, according to jail records.

Detectives are still investigating the shooting, and Groom was not able to say whether the man was armed, or if the shooting was in self-defense.

While there were reports of two cars fleeing the area, police found the drivers were not involved in the shooting, Groom said.

Pasco police believe they know everyone involved in the shooting, and believe it was an isolated incident, he said.

The man’s identity has not been released, but officials know who he is, Franklin County Coroner Curtis McGary told the Tri-City Herald.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Pasco police at 509-545-5421.

This is the second homicide in Pasco within a week. Cesar Diaz-Avila, 39, died on Monday, March 2, after being stabbed in an alley south of Sylvester Street.

Groom said there doesn’t appear to be any ties between the two deaths.
