A set of expired registration tags led to Kennewick officers searching a neighborhood for a missing driver who fled from police.

A Kennewick police officer spotted a car on Ely Street with expired registration about 11:35 a.m. Tuesday and signaled it to stop, Commander Isaac Merkl told the Tri-City Herald.

The officer didn’t pursue the driver, but did find the car a short time later where it slid off the road near 24th Avenue and hit a retaining wall.

Police gathered at Heritage Landscaping’s parking lot on 27th Avenue and scoured the area for the driver, but they weren’t able to find the person, Merkl said.

Investigators are working on a search warrant to try and determine who was driving. Merkl said the car wasn’t reported stolen, and it’s not clear why the driver ran from police.
