A dog was shot in a Richland neighborhood Monday afternoon after two dogs jumped a fence and were reportedly attacking another dog.

The loose dogs, which appeared to be a Belgian malinois and a pit bull mix, were on the 1000 block of Winslow Avenue about 3 p.m. on Monday, Richland police Commander Damon Jensen told the Tri-City Herald.

They jumped into a fenced yard and began attacking a blue heeler.

When neighbors couldn’t separate the dogs using a shovel, one neighbor shot and wounded one of the dogs with a .22 caliber handgun. That stopped the attack and the heeler was not injured.

The owner of the loose dogs arrived after the shooting and caught the dogs. It’s unclear how injured the wounded dog was.

Tri-Cities Animal Control is investigating what happened.
