Hit-and-run driver hurts kid on a scooter. Police need help finding culprit

Kennewick police are asking residents of a central Kennewick neighborhood to check security cameras to help identify a hit-and-driver who hit a 14-year-old on a scooter on a quiet residential street Sunday.

The victim was riding his electric scooter in Ranchette Estates near West Sixth Avenue and South Taft Street at 5:10 p.m., Sunday, when he was hit by a black sedan. He suffered a broken ankle.

The driver sped off south on Taft without checking on the victim or summoning help, as required by law, said police, who are treating the incident as a felony hit-and-run.

Residents in that area are asked to check home surveillance systems for images captured between 5 and 5:15 p.m., Nov. 23.

Even if footage doesn’t show the collision, it may capture vehicles that passed through the area and help detectives identify the suspect vehicle.

Staying on scene isn’t just the law—it’s the right thing to do, the police department said in a Facebook post.
