Prosser school officials are cleaning up a big mess left by vandals who broke into the administration building Wednesday night.

Several culprits broke in about 10 p.m. to the former Prosser high school, which has been converted into the administration building, police said in a Facebook post.

They emptied a fire extinguisher and spray-painted a trophy case and a multipurpose room stage, among other damage.

When police arrived, the vandals had run away but officers found one teen hiding. He was arrested after a short chase.

He was booked into the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree burglary.

Superintendent Kim Casey told the Tri-City Herald that crews have been cleaning up the mess and it’s not interfering with district business and getting ready for the new school year.

While it will take some time to clean up, nothing was permanently broken, she said. They are still assessing if anything was stolen.

The district will need to fix a window hinge and repaint the stage.

Most of the cost will be in “manpower and cleaning hours and chemicals,” officials said.

Prosser shooting

On Monday, a 19-year-old woman was accidentally shot in the back at a Prosser house near County Route 12, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Benton County deputies and Prosser police officers responded to the shooting Monday evening and found the wounded woman, who was taken to a local hospital.

Benton County deputies were still trying to investigate what happened inside the house. The woman wasn’t cooperating with police, the Facebook post said.

While investigators believe the shooting was not intentional, Lt. Mike Clark said it’s not clear if it happened because a man at the home was negligent.
