A 29-year-old man will serve more than 13 years in prison after shooting his mother and stepfather at their Franklin County home last year.

Daniel Arceo-Martinez pleaded guilty in Franklin County Superior Court to two counts of first-degree assault for the Sept. 24 shooting just south of Othello, court documents said.

Arceo-Martinez had a history of attacking his stepfather, Francisco Chavez Calvario, who he felt took away his mother’s affection, court documents said.

He faced between 13 1/2 and 18 years in prison. Judge David Petersen followed the prosecutor and defense recommendation and sentenced Arceo-Martinez to the minimum end of the range.

Chavez Calvario and the man’s mother, Maria Martinez, weren’t at the sentencing hearing.

Arceo-Martinez told a mental health evaluator that he wanted to turn his life around and had enrolled in programs to better himself.

His attorney Peyman Younesi said the young man wanted to take responsibility for his actions early in the case. As Younesi explained the case to him, Arceo-Martinez seemed excited about the future and working to reconcile with his parents.

“I found him to be a quiet, well mannered young man and very respectful to me and the court. I enjoyed working with him,” Younesi said.

Shooting

Martinez, 57, and Francisco Chavez Calvario, 50, were found wounded outside their home at the former Air Force housing at 9090 Sagehill Road, court documents said.

The rural area is east of the Scootney Reservoir, about 13 miles south of Othello and 40 miles north of Pasco.

Neighbors rushed the couple to Othello Community Hospital in their cars before deputies arrived.

Martinez was hit in the leg. Her wounds were not life-threatening, and she was moved to another hospital.

Chavez Calvario was hit in the torso and was in critical condition, said officials.

Arceo-Martinez drove off in a white 2009 Chevy Impala, according to the sheriff’s office. He was arrested in Moses Lake a day after the shooting.

History of assault

After his arrest, Arceo-Martinez’s mental health was evaluated to determine if he could help his attorney.

He told the evaluator that he grew up with his mother near Othello. She married Chavez Calvario when he turned 15 and he felt like he was being forced out of the home, court documents said.

The relationship turned violent sometime after. Arceo Martinez was sentenced to a year in prison in 2017 after he used a shovel handle to hit Chavez Calvario in the head, ribs and leg.

Arceo-Martinez claimed at the time they had an argument about him smoking marijuana in the house.

He told officers that his stepfather swung first and then he grabbed the handle to an old shovel and hit his stepfather several times, according to court documents.

He pleaded guilty to third-degree assault in Franklin County Superior Court.
