Two men in their 40s died in an ATV crash Sunday on a rural stretch of road south of Kennewick.

The men, ages 49 and 42, were riding a mini-bike and a four-wheeler about 9 p.m. on Dague Road when they apparently collided head on, said Benton County Coroner Bill Leach and Benton County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Clark.

They both died at the scene.

The rural area has no streetlights and is between Perkins and Bowles roads in Finley.

The names of the men haven’t been released to the public. The coroner’s office is waiting for confirmation that the families have been notified.

It’s not clear how the crash happened, whether the men lived in the area or if they knew each other.

Clark told the Herald they are still trying to understand what happened.

The crash was discovered by another driver who found the men and the wreckage in the roadway shortly after it happened but the driver did not know them, Clark said.

Clark said they are also investigating whether alcohol played a role.
