Pedestrian fighting for his life after hit by pickup in Kennewick. 2nd crash traps teen
A 46-year-old man is fighting for his life after he was hit by a pickup truck while crossing a Kennewick street on Sunday night.
A half hour later, a Kennewick teen also was severely injured when she lost control while driving on Highway 395 near Mesa. She had to be flown by LifeFlight to a Tri-Cities hospital.
The first happened about 5:15 p.m. when a pickup hit the pedestrian crossing on the 1100 block of West 10th Avenue by the Arlo Apartments, near Park Middle School, Kennewick police said in a Facebook post. Police said he was not in a crosswalk.
When officers arrived, they found the man with serious life-threatening injuries. His condition Monday was not immediately available.
The 63-year-old driver stayed on the scene and spoke with police. It’s not clear if she will face any charges.
Investigators closed the road closed nearly five hours while the Kennewick police traffic unit and Richland police investigated, Kennewick police said.
Police who may have seen the collision to call the non-emergency dispatch number at 509-628-0333.
Half an hour later, Laura Kirkwood of Kennewick lost control of her 2011 Ford Crown Victoria on Highway 395.
The 18-year-old was heading south on the highway when she swerved to avoid debris in the road about 5:45 p.m., the Washington State Patrol and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said in releases. Her car slammed into a guardrail, trapping her in the wreckage.
A Franklin County sheriff’s sergeant was the first to arrive and stayed with her until rescue teams could help free her, the sheriff’s office said.
She was flown to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland. Her condition was not immediately available Monday.
Washington State Patrol investigators say that she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
