Oregon State Police is circulating a photo of a suspect caught on a trail camera where a bull elk was poached on Labor Day weekend in Northeast Oregon.
When a trooper with the state police Fish and Wildlife Division arrived in the area, a man had begun recovering the meat from a mature bull elk that was shot killed with archery equipment.
The man left without taking any of the meat or the antlers, according to state police.
Troopers remained there for several hours to salvage what they could of the meat and the suspect did not return during that time.
The location of the dead elk has not been made public to help the investigation, according to state police.
The suspect may have been driving or riding in a white late-model GMC or Chevrolet pickup. It was a full-size, four-door truck with tinted windows, according to the state patrol.
Potential charges include failing to retrieve edible portions of wildlife and waste of wildlife.
Anyone who can identify the man whose photo was caught on the trail camera or have other information is asked to called Senior Trooper Kris Davis at 800-452-7888, which is the Oregon Turn in Poachers line.
Tips can be submitted to TIP@osp.oregon.gov. Calls and tips may be left anonymously.
The Turn in Poachers, or TIP, program rewards those whose information leads to an arrest or citation with hunting preference rewards and, in cases involving elk, a possible cash reward from the Oregon Hunters Association of $1,000.
