Update | Kennewick SWAT standoff ends in 2 arrests, continued search for suspect
Kennewick police have cleared the scene of an hours-long standoff near an elementary school. But they’re still searching for the suspect.
The Kennewick Police Department and Tri-City Regional SWAT team were attempting to locate several wanted people near home at the corner of West 6th Avenue and South Conway Street on Thursday morning.
Kennewick police said the incident began when a patrol officer who was checking the area located a stolen vehicle in front of the residence. They arrested one person wanted for an unspecified crime and believed a second person they were looking for was inside the home.
That led to a standoff with a suspected believed to be barricaded in the home, which is in a neighborhood south of Westgate Elementary School, near the Zintel Canyon Playground.
Westgate and Keewaydin Discovery Center were placed under a non-critical lockdown due to police activity in the area, according to the Kennewick School District.
The standoff began just before 11 a.m. and lasted until about 4 p.m. Police were working to get a person to come out of the house, according to a social media post from the department.
A total of 13 people came out of the home and two were arrested on unrelated charges, Kennewick police said in an update on social media.
Kennewick police told the Herald that the standoff had ended, but they were unable to locate the suspect. They will continue searching for them.
They did not release a name or say what the person was wanted for.
