A 15-year-old with what appeared to be a handgun sent Kamiakin High School into a lockdown on Friday.

Kamiakin staff told the school resource officer that a student was spotted passing a handgun around on campus about 12:45 p.m., according to Kennewick police.

Other officers were alerted and the school was locked down while officers located the student.

The 15-year-old was found with an airsoft gun tucked into his waistband six minutes later. He had removed the orange tip that lets people know that it’s not a real gun.

The student didn’t say why he had the gun on school property. He was booked into the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Detention Center in Kennewick on suspicion of possessing a dangerous weapon on school grounds, Kennewick police said.
