2 hurt trying to beat a train at a railroad crossing in Finley

A car was hit by a train in Finley on Tuesday night when the driver tried to rush through the rural railroad crossing.

The driver and a passenger ended up in a hospital.

A man and woman in their 20s were heading to Toothaker Park as the train was approaching at Meals Road and Toothaker Road, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

While the crossing doesn’t have any crossing arms or warning lights, Lt. Jason Erickson said you can see a quarter mile in both directions.

The train also blasted its horn.

The car nearly made it entirely across the tracks before the rear end was hit by the train.

The crash left one of them with a broken leg and the other with some minor injuries. They were taken to Trios Southridge Hospital in Kennewick.
