Kennewick driver jailed after hitting a woman in a Richland crosswalk

A Kennewick driver is being held in the Benton County jail on suspicion of vehicular assault after hitting a woman crossing the street Monday evening.

Christiana Williams, 44, of Richland, was hit by a Suzuki Esteem while she was in a crosswalk on Highway 240 near Duportail Road in Richland just before 7 p.m., said the Washington State Patrol.

She was hit by Laura J. Pickel, 46, who was headed west on Highway 240.

WSP investigators say alcohol or drugs are suspected of playing a role in the crash. Pickel is being held on an investigative hold with no bail.

Williams was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, where she was listed in critical condition.
