Troopers clocked him at 101 mph on Pasco’s I-182. He admitted drinking beer on his way home
A Kennewick man clocked doing 101 mph on Interstate 182 tried to get away from troopers by taking a Pasco exit.
Juan A. Calderon then sped down Road 68 and ditched his car in the middle of Sandifur Parkway.
But, now on foot, he couldn’t outrun a Washington State Patrol car and was arrested in the middle of a nearby business parking lot.
After Pasco police noticed an open beer bottle in the center console of Calderon’s abandoned car, the driver admitted having three to four beers that night.
His last drink was in the car on his way home, Calderon told troopers.
Calderon, 28, has pleaded guilty in Franklin County Superior Court to one felony count of attempting to elude police.
Now he is serving a four-month sentence in the county jail. He could have received up to a year behind bars.
Calderon’s criminal history includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, drug possession, burglary and vehicle theft.
According to court documents, Trooper Mark Francis was parked in the median of the Pasco highway at 11 p.m. April 3 when he noticed a car speeding in the far right westbound lane.
Francis’ radar showed the car was doing 101 mph in a 70-mph zone. The car was passing other vehicles on the highway in the right lane, instead of getting over to the left, Francis noted.
The trooper activated his lights and siren and “accelerated hard to catch up” to the car, but Calderon sped up in an attempt to get away, documents said.
Calderon exited at Road 68 and traveled north, doing more than 70 mph in a 35-mph zone.
He continued to pass other cars and speed through intersections before turning westbound onto Sandifur.
Calderon stopped his car in the middle of the street and got out, running into the Gesa Credit Union parking lot, court documents said.
Francis followed in his patrol car, so Calderon “turned around and put his hands up as if to give up,” documents said.
He was arrested at gunpoint.
