Prosser man killed after veering into oncoming car driven by man who was drunk, say police

A Prosser man died Friday after Washington State Patrol troopers say his car crossed the centerline on a rural highway, hitting a car driven by a man suspected of being drunk.

Santiago Acosta Navarrate, 35, was heading north on Highway 221 just before 5:45 p.m., according to the WSP. He was about 2 miles south of Prosser on the two-lane highway when he crossed into the southbound lane.

His Honda Civic slammed into a Subaru Legacy driven by Ronald C. Jones, 43, of Horsehoe Bend, Idaho. Then, Jones left the scene of the crash, said investigators.

Officers caught up to him a short time after and found he was drunk, said the WSP.

Acosta Navarrate, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Jones was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and will be cited for DUI, the state patrol said. He is being held without bail in the Benton County jail.
