Kennewick police wanted the driver. His passenger ended up in cuffs for guns and drugs
A Kennewick man was allegedly caught with methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl pills during a late-night traffic stop.
Prosecutors say the backpack that held the drugs was stashed under the front seat where Hector V. Magana Jr. was a passenger.
Magana, 25, now is locked up on $80,000 with five felony charges. He also has several warrants and holds for failing to comply with court orders in prior cases.
Detectives were on North Columbia Center Boulevard on Jan. 17 when a car drove past with a male driver who was known to have an active state Department of Corrections arrest warrant.
They stopped the vehicle and took the driver into custody. There were two other men inside the vehicle, including Magana.
Dispatchers then advised detectives that Magana also had an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant, court documents said.
Guns and drugs seized
As they were arresting Magana, detectives allegedly noticed a soft gun holster between the front passenger seat and the center console, a .22-caliber gun in the back pouch of the front passenger seat and a plastic bag with a small amount of pills in the front passenger door panel.
Magana also had $960 in cash, documents said.
A detective suspected they were fentanyl-laced pills, and had the vehicle seized.
Then, on Jan. 21 after getting a search warrant, detectives went through the car and found the backpack under the front passenger seat, court documents said.
The backpack held 113 grams of meth, 40 grams of heroin and 186 blue pills with fentanyl. A debit card with Magana’s name also was in the backpack, documents said.
Numerous small, plastic bags were allegedly found on the backseat, along with a 9mm gun under the front passenger seat and a 9mm gun in the back pouch of that seat.
Magana has pleaded innocent in Benton County Superior Court to three counts of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver and two counts of first-degree illegal gun possession.
The drug charges are for the meth, heroin and fentanyl.
The gun charges are because Magana has prior felony drug convictions from 2017, prosecutors said.
His trial is March 23.
