A Kennewick man was passing a semi truck on Highway 24 when he slammed into an oncoming semi and died Wednesday.

Robert A. Weedmark, 67, was heading west on Highway 24 near the Vernita Bridge in a Saturn.

He tried to pass the semi at 5:30 p.m., said the Washington State Patrol.

Before he could finish passing, Weedmark hit head-on a Kenworth semi driven by a Florida resident.

Weedmark’s car was thrown into the semi he tried to pass.

The Florida semi driver then crashed into a westbound pickup truck driven by Gary M. Hammack, 60, of Kennewick.

None of the other drivers was injured.

Weedmark was a fish specialist with the Grant PUD. The utility manages two dams along the Columbia River.

The crash closed the highway for several hours.

Highway 24 runs through part of the Hanford nuclear reservation, with the former production portion on the east and the Hanford Reach National Monument on the west.
