A two-block stretch of Kennewick’s 10th Avenue was closed for about 10 hours after a gas line broke Monday morning.

A contractor was working on extending the 2 1/2-inch main gas line when he broke a fitting near the intersection of 10th Avenue and Cedar Street at 9:20 a.m.

Two homes were evacuated by police and fire officials, and Cascade Natural Gas employees monitored the concentration of gas being released into the air.

To fix the line, crews dug up a portion of 10th Avenue and pinched the line shut, said Battalion Chief Mike Barnett. The work ended about 7 p.m.

Gas service in the city wasn’t affected. Cascade Gas serves 28,500 customers in the Tri-Cities and 8,800 in Kennewick.
