Death threats led to 3-hour Prosser standoff
A Prosser man is in jail after triggering a three-hour standoff at his apartment complex.
Zachary Latham, 28, was driving home Tuesday to the Canyon Drive Apartments off Anna Street with his 37-year-old girlfriend when they started arguing, said Prosser police Officer Mark Cole.
During the argument, Latham reportedly threatened to kill her, said Cole.
The argument continued after they went inside. When a neighbor approached, Latham allegedly threatened to shoot the man in the head.
Police were called about 7:20 p.m. and when they arrived, Latham refused to come outside.
As the standoff stretched on, Benton County sheriff’s deputies and the Tri-Cities Regional SWAT team arrived to help.
Residents in the nearby homes were told to keep low or leave the area.
Officers called Latham to let him know he was under arrest and ordered him to leave the apartment, but he refused to budge.
They were planning to go into the apartment to arrest him about 10:20 p.m., when he walked out.
Latham was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of felony harassment.
