LATEST: I-84 in Oregon back open
Interstate 84 has reopened east of Pendleton after being closed for hours Monday because of a hazardous materials spill.
Current conditions on Cabbage Hill are clear with bare pavement but temperatures are in the mid-teens, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Eastbound lanes were closed about seven miles east of Pendleton after the truck carrying chemicals slid off the highway about 4 a.m.
The westbound lanes shut down about 24 miles east of the city.
The roadway reopened after six hours but then closed again later in the day as crews worked to remove the truck and chemicals.
The wreck was near Meacham.
An Oregon State Fire Marshal Hazmat team went to the scene to determine if anything leaked or posed any danger.
The cause of the crash hasn’t been determined, but icy roads in the area likely contributed.
The truck was carrying about a dozen 250 gallon totes of tetramethylammonium hydroxide, said Chris Wrathall, a hazmat technician with Umatilla County Fire District 1 who responded to the crash.
The chemical is typically used for etching or stripping is harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin, according to Concordia University.
When they responded they found none of the materials leaked out of the totes.
“Initially the driver reported seeing something leaking and we responded as a precautionary measure,” he said. “It turned out to be pretty well packed in there.”
NRC, a clean up company that works with the trucking company, took the chemicals off the trailer.
