Interstate 84 is closed again through Eastern Oregon about an hour after it opened.

Eastbound lanes are closed about 7 miles east of Pendleton. Westbound lanes shut down about 24 miles east of the city.

Interstate 84 was closed for more than six hours this morning, after a semi full of chemicals tipped over about 40 minutes east of Pendleton, shutting down the busy highway about 5 a.m. The roadway reopened about 1:50 p.m.

It shut again at around 3 p.m. to allow the chemicals to be moved safely from the truck. This closure is expected to last several more hours.

I-84 near Hood River is also back open after a jack-knifed truck hauling a manufacture home blocked the westbound lanes about 9:30 a.m.

The roadway was blocked for nearly 1 1/2 hours while tow trucks removed the truck and home, said Oregon State Police.

In Eastern Oregon, a truck hauling a load of hazardous materials was heading west when it slipped off the highway and rolled near Meacham.

Crews spotted a hazardous materials placard on the truck and closed both sides of the highway, said Tom Strandberg, a spokesman for the Oregon State Department of Transportation.

An Oregon State Fire Marshal Hazmat team went to the scene to determine if anything leaked or posed any danger.

The cause of the crash hasn’t been determined, but icy roads in the area likely contributed.

The truck was carrying about a dozen 250 gallon totes of tetramethylammonium hydroxide, said Chris Wrathall, a hazmat technician with Umatilla County Fire District 1 who responded to the crash.

The chemical is typically used for etching or stripping is harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin, according to Concordia University.

When they responded they found none of the materials leaked out of the totes.

“Initially the driver reported seeing something leaking and we responded as a precautionary measure,” he said. “It turned out to be pretty well packed in there.”

Fire district officials reported some diesel, motor oil and other fluids leaked out of the semi’s engine, but it they were minor.

NRC, a clean up company that works with the trucking company, took the chemicals off of the trailer.
