From the archives: Kennewick man’s machine inspires invention of combines

Edward Lang, 69, of Kennewick, second from right, claimed the cutter and binder in this photo had the first power take-off used.

He said the machine inspired the invention of combines.

This picture was taken in 1914 on Lang’s farm at Wonder Lake, Minn., the year he and his partner, John Dahlquist, right, put the machine together.

Though a patent was applied for and one offer of $20,000 was made, the inventors never received a cent for the outfit.

This photo published Jan. 26, 1956.
