Car drives into Richland Fred Meyer, injures four

Four people were injured Tuesday afternoon when a car drove onto the sidewalk at the Richland Fred Meyer, crashing into a glass entry way and putting the vehicle onto its side.

The crash happened at about 1:45 p.m., Richland police said. Witnesses said the car came up the main vehicle entrance for Fred Meyer off Wellsian Way at a high rate of speed and instead of turning left or right to enter a parking area, went straight and jumped the curb.

The car continued until it hit the outdoor enclosed glass entrance for the store’s grocery section, knocking it on its side and also causing it upset a gardening display. Two bystanders were injured by flying glass and another by what is believed to be flying pottery. They were treated at the scene.

The driver, whose identity wasn’t immediately released, was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation but authorities believe a medical condition led to the incident.
