2016 Memorial Day events

The following events are planned for Memorial Day weekend in the Tri-Cities:

▪ Columbia Memorial Chapel and Gardens is having a Memorial Day program at 1 p.m. May 30. Lunch will be at noon at the American Legion Hall, 1029 W. Sylvester St. in Pasco. Guest speakers include Chaplain Brian Conklin, American Legion Post #34 Commander Joe Winters, and retired sailor Tim Adams. Vicki Bowles will be singing the national anthem and taps.

▪ A VFW flag ceremony, bag pipers and a speaker are planned at 11 a.m. May 30 at Einan’s at Sunset, 915 Bypass Hwy. in Richland. More than 1,000 burial flags of veterans will be flown at the cemetery. Staffers will be on hand to help people find grave sites and there will be golf carts to help visitors get around. Hot dogs and ice cream will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 29-30 in the event center.

▪ A Memorial Day service is at 9 a.m. May 30 at the Riverview Heights Cemetery, 1200 S. Olympia St. in Kennewick and 11 a.m. at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1401 S. Union St. in Kennewick. It is sponsored by VFW Post 5785-Kennewick, Riverview Heights Cemetery, Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home, Mueller’s Greenlee Funeral Home and Mueller’s Chapel of the Falls.

▪ The American Legion of Benton City and Pasco Post 115 are holding an event at 11 a.m. May 30 at the Benton City Cemetery. Afterward, there will be a potluck at the American Legion Hall, 908 Dale Ave.

▪ The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center in Walla Walla will be holding its annual Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. May 30 in the VA’s Chapel. The short service will include special remarks from Glenn Silver, a Walla Walla VA employee and Vietnam veteran. Special music will be provided by Jan Williams. Floral tributes will be contributed by local veteran service organizations and guests are welcomed to contribute floral tributes. All tributes will be distributed to a local cemetery following the ceremony.

▪ Gov. Jay Inslee directs that Washington state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff May 30 in recognition of Memorial Day. in remembrance of the people who died while serving in the country’s Armed Forces.
