Funnel cloud seen near Tri-Cities Saturday

A funnel cloud was reported in the Tri-City area as a thunderstorm moved through the region about 5 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service confirmed.

A funnel cloud is a developing tornado that does not touch the ground.

The storm dropped hail, with the weather service hearing reports of hail ranging from the size of a pea to a marble to as large as a penny in Kennewick.

A sudden downpour flooded streets in the Tri-Cities, particularly in Kennewick.

A sudden burst of wind ripped a section of the roof off of Mark Baker’s house on 10th Avenue in Kennewick. The family was watching the storm at the front of the house, with the wind already blowing, when a powerful burst of wind sent them running inside, he said.

The chunk of roof landed in a neighbor’s driveway, he said.
