Afro-American group to award scholarships on May 15

Fourteen high school seniors will receive more than $40,000 in scholarships during the annual awards ceremony on May 15 for the Tri-City chapter of Afro-Americans for an Academic Society.

Two seniors also will be awarded laptop computers for maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 since the fourth-grade. In all, more than 400 students will be honored for meeting the organization’s GPA requirements.

The event marks the organization’s 40th anniversary, said president Sharon Straws. The keynote speaker is Anthony Brown, one of the first students to go through the chapter’s program.

The ceremony is 2 to 5 p.m. at the Pasco Red Lion and includes dinner. Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased at Back Street Hair and Lucky Flowers in Kennewick, A Class Act and Xtreme Beauty in Pasco and Salon Remedi in Richland.
