Wrong way driver causes fatal crash near Pendleton

Two people were killed when a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 84 near Pendleton caused a head-on crash.

Oregon State Police identified Mary A. Padilla, 47, of Homedale, ID, and Shane R. Ware, 48, of Hermiston as the two drivers who died.

Troopers say Ware was driving a Saturn west in the eastbound lanes about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when he crashed into a Chevy Venture driven by Padilla.

A 10-year-old boy in the Chevy was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Pendleton with non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers are investigating if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

An Oregon woman was also taken to St. Anthony’s after Ware forced her car off the road near milepost 217, troopers said.

The woman avoided colliding with Ware shortly before he crashed into the Chevy.
