A Kennewick family is safe after a passer-by alerted them to a late-night fire in their garage.

Ignacio Ayala and his family escaped from a fire that began in a chicken coop next to the garage at 4802 W. Canal Drive late Thursday.

Capt. Devin Helland of Benton Fire District 1 said wind drove the flames into the garage and into the upper reaches of the home. Damage was extensive but some of its contents were salvageable. The home had an assessed value of about $122,000, according to Benton County property records.

An unknown number of chickens perished in the fire.

The fire was reported to the fire district and Kennewick Fire Department about 1:50 a.m. and they jointly put it out, Helland said.
