Richland now hiring lifeguards, swim instructors; lifeguard training classes set for May

The city of Richland Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for lifeguards and swim instructors for the summer season.

Full- and part-time positions are available. The hourly wage will vary between $10 to $11.50, depending on experience and qualifications. Employees must be age 15 or older, and show that they can effectively deal with people, have a take-charge attitude and be willing to develop new skills.

Prior to employment, lifeguards must complete a mandatory Red Cross lifeguarding class in May.

To qualify, applicants must pass a pre-course swim test, which requires the strength and stamina to swim continuously for 300 yards while completing a variety of tasks. The training will include First Aid, CPR and using an automated external defibrillator, or AED. Training costs $156 for Richland residents and $195 for others.
