A photo by a Tri-City Herald photographer was named the Washington Photo of Year by The Associated Press.

Photographer Andrew Jansen, who left the Herald in August and now works at the Springfield News-Leader in Missouri, captured a poignant moment during the funeral of Antonio Zambrano-Montes, who was shot and killed by police after throwing rocks at them last year.

His photo and one by Sy Bean of the Seattle Times were selected as the Washington Photos of the Year for 2015 from among the winners of the Washington Photo of the Month awards.

Bean’s photo is of Star Wars fans holding purple light sabers underneath the Space Needle.
