Teens trapped in snow rescued in Umatilla County

A pair of Snohomish teens traveling to Wyoming for Christmas had to be rescued after their vehicle got stuck in snow in Umatilla County.

Zachary Rich, 19, and Amanda Ruhnke, 18, were driving toward Idaho, where they planned to stop for the night before going on to Wyoming, authorities said.

The pair learned Interstate 84 was shut down by bad weather conditions, so they followed a detour on their GPS. The GPS led them through Pilot Rock onto East Birch Road.

Their SUV then got stuck in the snow near Indian Lake.

Ruhnke called 911 and a search team was organized to look for them. Search team members used snow mobiles to scour the area. They were found safe about seven hours later.
